Couple de Grands Ducs, c. 1931

Etching on parchment, signed and justified « épreuve d’artiste sur parchemin » (artist proof on parchment) lower left. One of a few rare luxury prints on parchment.
42 x 53 cm

History:
This proof, printed on parchment, is one of the ten subjects chosen for inclusion in the album edited by Editions Apollo for the Weill Gallery in 1931. From this portfolio were printed one hundred copies numbered from 1 to 100 as well as eleven luxury albums on Japan numbered from I to XI.

The artist reserved a few luxury copies on parchment for each of the subjects. Some of these albums were nested in a studded leather case produced by Hermès and decorated with an etching of the artist (using a model of a door hammer carved from his creation), one of which the gallery presents in this exhibition. The model behind this engraving, an oil on cardboard dated around 1927, is also presented in this show.
